The barracks are significant as a now rare form of accommodation in a period in which labour for working in the sugar industry was provided by a number of nationalities and wages and conditions and both wages and conditions were basic. Accommodation was placed close to the cane fields, contained only a small number of labourers and was often very rudimentary with only a kitchen and a bath area in an L shaped building layout. These buildings have long been abandoned as accommodation and were used for other purposes (storage, spare accommodation, horse stalls etc). As such they often fall into disrepair and are eventually demolished.
