Smarts/Shorts Farm
Places of Significance - Cairns Regional Council

The barracks are significant as a now rare form of accommodation in a period in which labour for the sugar industry was provided by a number of nationalities, and both wages and conditions were basic. Accommodation was placed close to the cane fields, contained only a small number of labourers and was often very rudimentary with only a kitchen and a bath area in an L shaped building layout. These buildings have long been abandoned as accommodation and were used for other purposes (storage, spare accommodation, horse stalls etc).
