R A Mayers and C M Mayers Barracks
Places of Significance - Cairns Regional Council

The barracks are significant as a now rare form of accommodation in a period in which labour for working in the sugar industry was provided by a number of nationalities and wages and conditions were basic. Accommodation was placed close to the cane fields and was usually very basic, often containing only a small number of labourers.  A kitchen and a bath area led to a L shaped arrangement of the building. These buildings have long been abandoned as accommodation and used for other purposes (storage, spare accommodation, horse stalls and so on).
