Museum Development Officer, Queensland Museum
Queensland Museum's regionally based Museum Development Officer in Cairns assists museums and collecting groups to identify, collect, preserve, interpret and display cultural heritage material

Queensland Museum runs a regional Museum Development Officer (MDO) program which employs five staff based in regional centres across Queensland: Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Toowoomba and Ipswich.

The MDO in Cairns, Dr Jo Wills, works from an independent office in town. Her role is to support small museums and collecting organisations across the broad Far North Queensland area and to promote, protect, inspire and interpret the region’s special material culture and stories. She curates exhibitions, preserves and helps manage collections, identifies significant collections, helps groups identify and apply for funding - supporting organisations by providing multifaceted museum advice. She uses her skills as a curator, heritage worker and historian to help groups bring their collections and stories to life.

The MDO works closely with Cultural Services staff at Cairns Regional Council and provides advice to them regarding museum and heritage projects.

The MDO program also provides support and hands on advice and assistance in the event of natural disasters and emergencies.
