Using the latest US milling technology, Thomas Behan (a surveyor), built the largest rice mill in Queensland, which started production in 1888 and milled one ton of rice a day. However, rice growing never took off in the north, and there was a decline once the gold rush ended. The mill closed in 1903 when the boiler exploded.
